Download PuTTY
Latest stable build
Free installer · Windows MSI · Linux and macOS packages
PuTTY is free to use. On Windows, choose the 64-bit or 32-bit MSI so putty.exe, puttygen.exe, pscp.exe, psftp.exe, plink.exe, and pageant.exe install together. File names typically reflect your CPU architecture (most PCs today use a 64-bit installer). After setup, use the Hands-on guide on this site for the first launch and SSH login.
Quick start |
Fastest route for most users. Download the official Windows installer (64-bit fits most modern PCs), run the MSI, then launch PuTTY from the Start menu. Create keys in PuTTYgen whenever the server expects public-key authentication. PuTTY main hub |
Windows |
MSI plus portable zip. Pick the build that matches your CPU architecture. After install, save a session with host, port 22, and SSH. For Telnet-only tasks, puttytel.exe remains in the bundle. If policy requires it, verify the publisher and checksum packaged with your download before running the installer. Feature snapshot |
macOS & Linux |
Repos and ports. On Linux, install putty and usually putty-tools for puttygen. On macOS, Homebrew, MacPorts, or similar channels ship the same family—follow whatever your administrator approves. PuTTYgen on every OS · Hands-on guide |
Security |
Before you connect. When policy requires it, validate checksums bundled with your download. On the first SSH handshake, compare the host-key fingerprint with your administrator. Protect private keys with a passphrase. Open the FAQ |
